GPS vs Fingerprint vs Face Scan Attendance: Which Is Right for Your Business?
Choosing how staff check in is the first decision when you set up an attendance system. The three common options in Cambodia are a GPS check-in on the phone, a fingerprint machine, and face scanning. Each fits a different kind of workplace.

GPS check-in on the phone
Staff check in from an app, and the system records where they are. You set an area around each branch, and check-ins outside it are rejected.
Good for: offices, shops and anyone who works at more than one location, especially sales and field staff who start the day at a customer.
Watch out for: GPS proves where the phone is, not who is holding it. Combine it with a selfie or face check if identity matters.
Fingerprint machines
A machine at the entrance reads each employee's fingerprint.
Good for: a single office or shop where everyone enters through one door.
Watch out for:
- Only works where the machine is, so it doesn't cover field staff.
- Worn or dirty fingers (common in construction, cleaning and factories) often fail to scan.
- Everyone touches the same sensor.
- Data often has to be exported from the machine and re-typed into payroll.
Face scanning
There are two kinds:
- Face scan in the app: the phone takes a selfie at check-in and matches it to the employee. This adds identity to a GPS check-in.
- Face scan device: a camera at the entrance recognises people as they walk past. No phone, no touching, and it is fast with a queue of workers.
Good for: factories, construction sites and large teams, including staff without smartphones.
Watch out for: choose a device with liveness detection, so a photo or video of someone can't be used to check in.
What matters more than the method
Whichever method you choose, the real time-saver is what happens after the check-in:
- Lates and early leaves calculated against each person's own schedule.
- Overtime and leave requested and approved in the same system.
- Payroll that uses the attendance data directly, including overtime pay and tax on salary.
Mixing methods
Most growing businesses end up with a mix: GPS and face scan in the app for office and field staff, and a face scan device at the factory gate. A good system puts all of them into one set of reports and one payroll.
